Although the mode of transportation may change over a person’s lifetime, the meaning remains constant: transport from one location to another enables participation in daily occupations (the things we want and need to do), such as employment, school, and social activities.

As occupational therapists, we possess the science-based knowledge and clinical skills to address important aspects of pre-driving for neurodivergent adolescents and young adults. Occupational therapy treatment with a focus on pre-driving skills can target and enhance performance in the following areas:

  • Visual scanning
  • Coordination
  • Reaction time
  • Impulse control
  • Social interactions
  • Time/money management
  • Multi-tasking
  • Regulation of sensory input

Thoughtful skill-building in this area could potentially enhance foundations in safety, independence, and mobility. If driving is not the right fit, our occupational therapists can assess other modes of transportation that enable participation in desired activities within the community.

Contact us if you are interested in discussing a treatment plan that involves pre-driving skills and whether it would be an appropriate time for an evaluation.
